Description

Biochem/physiol ActionsJacalin is extracted from Jack fruit seeds; a glycoprotein reported to bind human serum and secretory IgA.1 Jacalin is not blood group specific.2 The most effective inhibitor of hemagglutination is methyl α-D-galactopyranoside. The lectin is specific toward the Thomsen-Friedenreich (T) antigen, but has subtle differences in its combining site when compared to the site of Arachis hypogaea (peanut) agglutinin.3 Jacalin was also demonstrated to be a mitogen of T-lymphocytes.1
Preparation NotePrepared from Peroxidase (P 8375) using a modification of a published method1, which favors low molecular weight conjugates. Repurified after conjugation by affinity chromatography.
Unit DefinitionOne unit will form 1 mg purpurogallin in 20 sec from pyrogallol at pH 6.0 at 20 °C.
